Dynamic Leadership During Business Disruption

Volume: June 2023

If your organization is facing disruption as a result of the ascendence of artificial intelligence (AI), it is important for leadership to adapt and develop strategies that leverage AI technologies and benefit customers in the process. Here are 10 strategies to consider if your business is facing possible disruption due to AI.

  1. Embrace Artificial Intelligence as a tool: Instead of viewing AI solely as a threat, businesses should examine AI as a powerful tool for innovation and improvement. Guide your organization to identify areas and processes where AI can be implemented to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, increase revenues, and/or improve customer experiences.
  2. Invest in AI talent: Improving your team’s expertise in artificial intelligence may be crucial for your business to navigate potential disruption. Consider investing in training that provides your people with AI skills. An alternative is to hire new team members who understand and can implement artificial intelligence technologies.
  3. Adapt business models: For those of you that have engaged in our strategic planning programs/sessions, you have experienced tools to create and enhance your business model. Evaluate your current business model and identify areas where AI can disrupt or improve existing processes. Consider how AI can streamline operations, enhance product offerings, or enable new revenue streams. Adapt your business model accordingly to take advantage of AI's capabilities.
  4. Blank it out. On the heels of updating your business model, it may make sense to engage in our blank org chart exercise. If you believe your organization or industry will experience even minor disruption, you will want to ensure that your structure and organizational alignment is sound.
  5. Mind the metrics. Artificial intelligence relies heavily on data for its content creation and positioning. Update the metrics that your organization is tracking and leveraging so that you are cutting-edge in your industry. Collect and analyze relevant data to feed AI algorithms. This will enable more accurate predictions, relevant shared content, customized recommendations, and data-driven insights.
  6. Enhance customer/client/patient experiences: Artificial intelligence may be able to significantly improve customer experiences by providing personalized recommendations, real-time support, and/or predictive insights. Leverage AI technologies such as virtual assistants, chatbots, or recommendation engines to deliver tailored experiences that meet or exceed your customers’ expectations.
  7. Continuous learning and adaptation: AI technologies are constantly evolving. So too should your organization. Encourage a culture of continuous learning within your organization to keep up with the latest advancements. Stay updated on AI trends, attend conferences, leverage your executive coach, and foster an environment that encourages experimentation and innovation.
  8. Monitor the competitive landscape: Keep a close eye on how your competitors are leveraging AI. Monitor their strategies, partnerships, and investments in AI technologies. Identify opportunities where you can gain a competitive advantage or differentiate your offerings through AI.
  9. Provide policies and guidelines: Whether you like it or not, your people are using newer AI offerings such as ChatGPT and Bard. Some of our recent newsletters addressed the pros and cons of AI, as well as sample policies to consider. In addition, prioritize ethical considerations. As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, organizations should prioritize the ethics surrounding its use.
  10. Prepare for workforce changes: Adoption of new artificial intelligence may require reskilling or upskilling your workforce. Anticipate the changes AI will bring to job roles and skill requirements within your organization. Invest in training programs and support employees in acquiring the necessary skills to leverage to positives of AI systems effectively.

Bottom Line: Dynamic leaders are life-long learners. As such, they lead savvy organizations that are striving to be relevant and forward-thinking. By embracing and executing the key strategies put forth in this newsletter, your organization can proactively address disruptions that are caused by artificial intelligence. Ultimately, you and your team will be positioned to thrive in an AI-influenced future.

Until next time, be well.
